The canonisation of Blessed Carlo Acutis that was set to take place on 27 April has been suspended due to the death of Pope Francis.
"Following the death of the Supreme Pontiff Francis, it is announced that the Eucharistic Celebration and the Rite of canonisation of Blessed Carlo Acutis, scheduled to take place on 27 April 2025, Second Sunday of Easter or Divine Mercy Sunday, on the occasion of the Jubilee of Teenagers, is suspended," the Holy See Press Office <a href="https://press.vatican.va/content/salastampa/en/bollettino/pubblico/2025/04/21/250421c.html"><mark style="background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)" class="has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color">announced</mark></a> on 21 April.
Pope Francis, head of the Catholic Church for 13 years, died at the age of 88 years old on Monday following a stroke that led to heart failure.
Acutis, who was born in 1991, died at the age of 15 years old from leukaemia in 2006. He is set to become the first millennial canonised a saint. Pope Francis beatified Acutis in 2020 after recognising a miracle attributed to his intercession.
Pope Francis approved a second miracle attributed to Acutis’s intercession in 2024, thereby advancing the teen's path to sainthood.
The Pope's death, and the subsequent global attention it has captured, is causing all sorts of events to be delayed, from the canonisation of saints to significant sporting events.
The Women's Six Nations fixture between Italy and Wales that was due to occur this Saturday, 26 April, has been postponed due to the funeral of Pope Francis, <a href="https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/rugby-union/articles/clywekke80vo"><mark style="background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)" class="has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color">reports</mark></a> the <em>BBC</em>.
